from students:

"Hannah not only has technical merit, but more importantly, she understands music for what it is, just as I suspected when I first saw how fluent she is in improvisation. Therefore she is able to teach what is beyond mere notes reproduction and to guide the student to music as a great joy of life."

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that music is a language — one which expands our potential to express ourselves and connect with others far beyond spoken words. Every one of us has something to say, even if we haven't discovered it yet. Using music to express what's within us can be uniquely powerful and healing, both for ourselves and those who listen.

My goal is to help you develop a toolbox of technical skills that you can use to better execute your musical vision. Developing strong technique is the first step in learning to express yourself musically, similar to learning the grammar or sentence structure of a spoken language. Ultimately, a lack of proper technical skills will interfere with your ability to say what you want to say. Whether it's note accuracy, evenness, or smooth legato; technical fundamentals play a key role in your ability to express yourself clearly.

Along with developing your toolbox, we'll explore a variety of artistic approaches to strengthen the connection between your technical skills and emotions, or message. The frustration that comes from having something to say, but struggling to think of the words to explain it is similar to what many musicians experience when they feel a spark of inspiration, but fail to know how to translate that to the keyboard. The goal is to make this translation as effortless as possible by helping you utilize and combine the tools from your toolbox. Your musical vocabulary will expand the more you implement things like subtle changes in timing, phrase shaping, or varied articulation. Experimenting with these tools and learning through experience what works most effectively enables you to take ownership of your artistic choices.

I seek to create a personal and flexible learning experience that is based on your own interests and goals. When it comes to creating music, there is no one "right" method, only the one that is most effective in helping you reach your specific goals and find fulfillment through music. My lessons range from 20–60 minutes and are available as one-time, occasional, or recurring lessons. Additionally, I offer online asynchronous coaching (organized in weeks) where you submit videos and questions on your own time and receive written feedback, tips, and resources.
