Online Piano and Improvisation Lessons

Hi, my name is Hannah Hawes. I'm a professional pianist who focuses on playing and teaching music with an emphasis on live improvisation.

My private lessons cover variety of topics related to technique, music theory, composition, and improv customized to each student's unique interests.

My Teaching Philosophy

Music is often described as a universal language. But far from simply a metaphor, I believe "language" is the most accurate way to define what music is and how it functions. I approach teaching the piano from this perspective, with a special focus on improvisation — the art of expressing something original and spontaneous through music without preparation.

Just like a language, music communicates a message. It can tell stories, convey emotion, and often speak to us powerfully than words. And like a language, music requires certain skills to communicate intentionally and effectively. These can be grouped into three categories:

technical skills: learning to coordinate your fingers, to play evenly, to articulate notes in specific ways; establishing neural pathways and muscle memory

mental skills: learning to identify notation, detect patterns and simplify movements; efficiently implementing your technical skills

theoretical understanding: learning what intervals, chords, and harmonic movements convey and how to use them intentionally—understanding the "grammar" of music

As you develop your skills in these areas, you become more and more capable of expressing whatever it is you have to say. Just like speaking in your native language, creating and performing music can become effortless. The more familiar you are with a language, the more fluently you are able to speak it without preparation.

In addition to these functional skills, my teaching method focuses on what I believe to be the fundamental principles of meaningful music:

- the balance of structure and novelty expectation and surprise

- the balance of tension and release

- an underlying journey and return structure

and in the context of live improvisation:

- music as a form of play and exploration

- immersion in one's personal experience of the music

- music as a journey rather than the pursuit of a goal

I seek to create a personal, flexible learning experience that is based on your personal interests and goals. My lessons cover a variety of genres and topics from technique to composition, improv, and music theory, and welcome students of all skill levels. When it comes to learning music, there is no one "right" method, only the one that best aligns with your goals and helps you find fulfillment through music. My lessons range from 20–60 minutes and are available as occasional or recurring lessons.

from students:

"Hannah not only has technical merit, but more importantly, she understands music for what it is, just as I suspected when I first saw how fluent she is in improvisation. Therefore she is able to teach what is beyond mere notes reproduction and to guide the student to music as a great joy of life."
